Yes, all SmoothSkin devices are safe and gentle enough to treat the entire bikini area (including the bikini line, mons pubis, labia majora and perineum, to use the technical terms!) so if you want a Brazilian or Hollywood please feel free – just use extra caution to avoid treating the ‘inner parts’ of the bikini area, including labia minora, the vagina and anus as IPL is not suitable for treating these areas. If you’re using SmoothSkin Muse or Gold, this may also be a good time to turn on gentle mode.

Do not use the device directly on mucus membranes, the genitals or around the anus. These areas may have a darker skin colour and so to avoid injury they should not be treated.

Of course! SmoothSkin devices are not gender specific. Just remember that whereas women can use SmoothSkin devices from the cheekbones down, we advise men to treat from the neck down only.

Smoothskin is not recommended for use on the male face or beard. The depth and thickness of this type of hair need to be targeted with a much higher level of energy to be effective, which means SmoothSkin is unlikely to produce the desired results. Hair density on the male face is also very high, and so there’s a chance of burns being induced by the device.

Yes – there are a number of conditions that may affect your suitability for IPL treatment.

These include (but are not limited to): skin cancer, or any other localised cancer in the areas to be treated; history of vascular disorder, such as the presence of varicose veins or vascular ectasia in the areas to be treated, skin which is sensitive to light and easily develops a rash or an allergic reaction; diabetes; lupus erythematodes; porphyria ; congestive heart disease; skin infections, eczema, burns, inflammation of hair follicles, open lacerations, abrasions, herpes simplex, wounds or lesions and haematomas in the areas to be treated.

Yes. Some medication can affect how you respond to IPL treatment, and as a result whether you are suitable to use SmoothSkin products.. Certain medications can make your skin more sensitive and a flash of intense pulsed light could cause injury, including Retin A, Accutane and/or other topical retinoids.

Not usually, a slight tingling or a warm sensation is generally what most people feel. However, the sensation varies from person to person. People with coarse, dark hair may experience an initial sensation similar to that felt by the gentle flick of an elastic band.

SmoothSkin Gold features GENTLE MODE, which can help you get used to the experience if you do find treatments a little uncomfortable at first.

Interesting fact! Hair grows in 3 distinct and consecutive phases, and not all hairs are in the same phase at any one time. IPL treatment is only effective in one particular phase (the Anagen ‘growth phase’ – since you ask), so in the first few weeks following your initial treatments, you will still see some hairs growing. Relax! These will likely be the hairs that were not treated in their growth phase (when IPL is most effective) so be sure to keep up with the treatments! Within 4 weeks, you should be seeing a reduction in hair regrowth. There will still be some hairs that need treating as you need to catch each hair in the right phase, but don’t worry, things will only get better from here on in – so keep it up!
